What’s really in your food?

Ultra-processed foods, or UPF, are often made with additives, sweeteners and other ingredients that encourage people to eat more of them – and this can lead to a number of serious health harms.

Not all processed food is harmful. But eating too much UPF is linked to diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other illnesses. Federal regulation of UPF is lacking but some states, including California, are leading the way in tackling the risks of harmful ingredients in food. Checking product ingredient labels on EWG’s Food Scores and making some simple, affordable changes to what you eat can help to reduce the amount of UPF in your diet.
