Sydney Swanson

Sydney Swanson is a senior science analyst at EWG, specializing in ingredient transparency, chemical safety and consumer product evaluation. She joined EWG in 2018.

Sydney played a key role in the development of EWG Verified® criteria across multiple categories, including mattresses, diapers and pet grooming products. She now leads the scientific review process for these categories, in addition to EWG Verified cleaners, evaluating ingredients and formulations against EWG’s health-based standards. 

Through EWG’s Reviewed for Science consultancy program, Sydney also works closely with brands and manufacturers, helping them develop products that meet the rigorous requirements of EWG Verified and advance safer product formulation practices. 

She also contributes to scientific research and annual science updates to EWG’s standards, helping ensure criteria evolve to reflect emerging ingredients, product formats and developments in consumer product safety and transparency. 

Sydney is pursuing a Master of Science degree from the University of San Francisco in environmental management with a concentration in environmental health and hazards. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
